La consulta preconcepcional es el derecho que tienen todas las personas de planear su salud y la de su familia a futuro, para cuando llegue el momento de un embarazo. El objetivo es brindar medidas preventivas y estudiar los antecedentes de la persona gestante y los de su pareja para preparar el embarazo de la mejor manera.
Esta consulta se realiza para identificar de manera temprana los riesgos y alternativas de la concepción y adoptar las medidas necesarias para disminuirlos, evitando problemas o complicaciones de salud. De esta manera se facilita el acompañamiento a una gestación en las mejores condiciones posibles luego de la evaluación de los riesgos biológicos y sociales, el diagnóstico y tratamiento oportuno de alteraciones que puedan afectar la gestación, facilitando que la persona tome decisiones en relación con la planeación de la gestación.
Durante la consulta el profesional hace preguntas para reconocer algún tipo de enfermedad preexistente, antecedentes familiares y aspectos generales sobre la salud de la pareja. Se realizan exámenes de laboratorios entre otras pruebas para conocer la condición de salud de la persona que planea el embarazo. Así mismo, se indican medidas preventivas como el uso de medicamentos (ácido fólico), aplicación de vacunas (toxoide tetánico y diftérico en la adultez) y en caso de ser necesario, se remite a otros servicios de salud, consejería, apoyo o tratamientos especiales.
Se recomienda acceder a esta consulta por lo menos un año antes de la fecha planeada para iniciar el embarazo o gestación. Colombia cuenta con la Ruta Integral de Atención en Salud (RIAS) para todos los asuntos relacionados con la salud materna y del bebé en donde se mencionan todas las acciones y servicios a los que tienes derecho.

Para reducir el riesgo de complicaciones, se sugiere esperar entre 18 y 24 meses después del parto anterior antes de buscar un nuevo embarazo. Alguno de los riesgos asociados a espaciar muy poco tus embarazos incluyen:
Muchos estudios han reportado que estos y otros riesgos se presentan en casos de mujeres con un tiempo menor o igual a 18 meses, aumentando el riesgo cuando se presenta antes de los 12 meses. Además de necesitar una recuperación física por parte de la embarazada, también se requiere un tiempo para afianzar los lazos afectivos entre la madre y el hijo(a) anterior, además de habituarse a nuevas las rutinas que implican el cuidado de un menor.
Ante estos posibles riesgos y complicaciones, la decisión de un nuevo embarazo y su planeación a través de un método anticonceptivo, es fundamental para la toma de decisiones y el bienestar de toda la familia.
